The Challenge
This was a national competition won by Weiss Manfredi Architects and involved the restoration of the historic hemicycle wall at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery and the creation of new multi-functional spaces behind the wall that would serve as a memorial to women who have served in the military. Michael DeCandia, the founder of the ECO Design Group LLC, served as the managing partner. No useable space existed behind the wall and the challenge was to preserve the visual and structural integrity of the hemicycle wall that was originally designed McKim Mead and White.
The Solution
Creating a new theater, gallery, hall of honor, registry, and all the other support space proved to be an engineering exercise in and of itself but the use of skylights with inscriptions on the new roof terrace was what provided the natural light to the gallery spaces below. The existing pylons were used to house the elevators.
